Guidelines for flights to and from Newtownards from outside Northern Ireland

Legal Position

The ‘Prevention of Terrorism Act’ requires that all flights to & from Northern Ireland, The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands shall take place between ‘Designated Airports’ unless notification has been given in advance to the Chief Constable of the Police Force responsible for the airport.

Newtownards Airport is NOT a designated airport and therefore notification must be given.

The normal minimum period of advance notice is 12 hours as outlined in the footnote to the GAR form.

A standard “General Aviation Report” (GAR) form was introduced early in 2003; this form meets the requirements of the Customs & Excise, The UK Police Services Ports Office and the UK Immigration Service. Blank copies of the form are available from the Newtownards general office, or online from the PSNI web site .

Additional constraints apply to helicopter flights in and out of Northern Ireland.

Remember that you must give notification to the relevant local Police at both ends of your flight. This can be achieved by completing and submitting a GAR to the National Clearing Unit (NCU) and the PSNI.

Flight between a non-designated Airfield in the UK & Northern Ireland

Contact the UK airfield in advance and advise them that you have submitted a GAR to the NCU. Give as much notice as possible and have available full information on Pilot and Passengers.
