Naviagation Computer

Hi guys,

I have started reading up on air navigation for my next test, and was wondering what is the preferred method for calculating triangle of velocities on the wind side of the computer? as the book suggests two but advises to learn one and to get advice from others on which to choose.

wind down
the only logical one. I can't get my head round the other one
The way I think of it imagine you are a helicopter in the hover .With the wind dialled up its easy to see that this will blow you down
then just add in your airspeed vector and its pretty easy to see which way the wind will blow you

Phil,

I think the club wants students to use "Wind Up".

Personally, I prefer wind down as it seems more logical and it's what Bristol Ground School (ATPL training providers) use in all their notes. I suspect that there may be pros and cons to both methods. EG: wind down might be more logical but there is the "jiggle" factor at the end to get the right heading when you're working out heading to obtain a certain track.

Speak to the instructors and use what they advise (which I suspect will be wind up). Then when you qualify you can use what ever you fancy.

Regards,
R.

Phil, it doesn't really matter. When you are next in (Sunday?) catch me and I'll show you both. Personally I'm not a fan of insisting on a particular method; choose the one that suits you best.

Wind vector down!!! If you have a CRP1 or indeed a CRP5 (airtour) there will be sufficient explanation in the instruction booklet (yes there is a booklet) in both to explain exactly why the wind down method is preferable. You can always choose though!!
