PPL training and monthly budget

Postby david_ards » Tue May 25, 2010 5:34 pm

Hi,

I want to start my ppl training at the UFC, I really don't want to get a bank loan, nor I have enough savings as i am only 15 years old.
So my question would be, what's the realistic amount per month, that I have to commit myself to, from start to finish of training ? and would £80 a month cover it?

Thanks.

Hi David

I've only started my training recently and I think 2 lessons per month would be ok though depending on the aircraft it would be more than £80. Try to come down to the club and speak to someone and maybe get a trial flight and see how you like it. An instructor will tell you how often you should fly and will give you some advice. You are still young and I would stay away from loans if I were you.

Hi David
I am more or less just started flying to, I have about 4 maybe 5 hours and im only 15 as well but there is only one way of getting money to go flying and that would be a job I currently dont have one but I am looking into it (not) and I just sold a train so ill keep going with the money that I have got for now then ill get some sort of job. i would recommend the cessna 152 but that's currently unavailable so its the cessna 172 or the pa-28.

Hope this helped, Richard.

you need about 90 pound for single 45 min lesson on 152. However, be aware that your training will take very long time that way.

Hi,

So where did we get with this discussion? I'm still interested in learning, so working out how much I would need to budget would be a useful exercise.

Hopefully I'll get myself a trial/test flight this summer. Which plane does UFC use for student pilots these days? Is it a C172, C152, or PA-28 (warrior). Is there an adantage to be had by learning in any particular model (I'm male, in my 30s , 17 stone, 6ft)?

I'm thinking two 45min lessons a month might be workable, that said, I can probably free up the funds to do the training more quickly if that is advisable. What about extra charges, landing fees etc...?

Weight and Balance

As yet I don't know if the 152 is back in service.
I would need to ask next time I'm down.
You're certainly a big guy and you may well be better off in a 172 or pa28
all airplane are designed with a maximum useful load
this included
fuel
pilots
baggage
passengers
I know your weight
you would have to know
your instructor weight
after that you could calculate how much fuel you could carry
ie
work out how long a lesson you could manage in the 152
I know the 4 seaters will have no problem lifting 2 big men plus plenty of fuel
hope that us helpful

Im not expert on our 152 GBNKR
but just looking on the net a useful load of a 152 could be 520lb
let say we both go flying
declan 207lb
You 243lb
total 450
that leaves 80lb for fuel
6lb per US gallon approx 13 USG total fuel and you would be a Maximum all weight. That would be for a brand new C152
You would tend to be not as generous with an old aircraft
Bascially it doesnt leave a lot for fuel
Maybe an hour's useful flight time so you would have some reserve
As i say I dont know actual figure for GBNKR as i'm at home now
but the book will tell you
call down to the club and have a chat with any of the instructors
hope this is helpful
Oh the useful load of a C172 is in the order of 800lb
the 300lb extra is very useful
